Layout

The layout between nme and kerrang are very similar with it being in 3 stages across the 2 pages the first stage is to the left and is the main picture to go with the article next is the article going in two columns down the page with a quote being a different size and color been placed somewhere in the text to make it stand out and sum up the article the 3rd stage is where the two differ but not to much. the kerrang mag has a off section on the new tracks the band there interviewing has released however nme manages to keep on track with the article like kerrang with it being about new music which is what the magazine article is about but differers as it isn't a direct ink to the article more of a different article it self.  the third magazine (that shall now be called generic urban mag or GUM for short) is different from both the indie and rock magazine in its choice of layout as it misses the second article and the 2 columns of text instead just one with the main focus being draw to the picture instead of the text.

Pictures

All 3 magazines use a unique style of picture to represent the band they are talking about. in the NME mag it uses a in-formal style of picture as first the clothes of the band are very casual them being in t-shirt in jeans and them looking very casual on a bed or sofa with what seems like a typical lads room with pictures oh half naked women going along with the band title of the teenagers this also represent there target audience of the younger generation who see them selfs in these 3 members. This is a direct contrast to the GUM which you are not meant to relate to these group of people there meant to be admired, looked at but not touched this is backed by there clothes which are gold and also designed very formal however to keep with there demographic of young urban people they are also wearing the clothes a hip hop fashion such as the man on the left who despite the formal jacket shirt and tie is still wearing baggy trousers this reaches there target audience as people are used to see these kind of people as high up role models for people to try and reach there status and one day be like them.

Colors
The colors in each magazine is different with them all having a different main background color. for the GUM the only color used is the white for the background this is to help make the article and picture it self stand out to make it seem more alive. The NME the background is separated along with the 3 separate parts the first is the picture then its a white background with black text that also uses blue for things like quotes and the title these are so the don't blend in and make them seem more important. karrang is only 3 colors black red and white and even then the white is used in one section so people know its different. So the 2 man colors black and red are used most as it reflects the band type and the target audiences stereotype  which is of a teenage youth who is quite dark and into things like heavy metal so the 2 man colors being black and red i think fit the stereotype very well.

Did they reach there target audience?

Overall i think that all 3 did very well to reach there target audiences.

GUM-the urban magazine kept things very simple to reach there audience using only very basic and few colors also using a very simple layout and not trying to over complicate things by filling the page with text instead making the most important thing as it makes you understand what the article will be about. Also the use of the catchphrase 'Will he , Wont he' Bring curiosity to the ready to carry on reading the article.

NME- the nme went a dfferen't approach from the GUM and instead filled the page with pictures and text and a variety of colors so you get a different feel from this. For example the thing that represents there target audience the most is the picture which is of late teens in what seem to be a guy sort of flat with the mini pics in the background which reaches there audience of young male and also the look of the clothes that shows them as sort of indie-ish makes it so they got the target almost spot on.

Karrang-karrang main point of reaching there audience is also the picture which is the same with all 3 as its the thing our eyes are always attracted to. in this double page spread the picture uses the color of it most to reach the audience with it being black but with it also being of it during a live concert also makes it twice as better for there audience as i think that the majority of people who would pick up there magazine would be into live music and going to gigs. so overall the magazine did very well as it not only  the picture but also t uses font and the color of the font as well to get across who its aimed at with the font being thick block letter with what seems to be pain spatter across them something that is often seen makes you think of this kinda genre of music (rock) and the people who listen to it along with the font color sometimes being red which along with the black in the picture works very well together to make a good representation of there audience.

Overall i think that the 3 magazines used mostly the pictures to get there target audience this will effect my magazine a lot as it will sway my choice of picture for the double page spread and how i choice to edit or if i do also from the karrang magazine i learned that things like the color of the font can also help reach my target audience.

Analysis of 3 music mags

These are 3 examples of contents pages and how i analyzed them to their target audience.

This contents page is from the magazine of NME (New Musical Express) which is a music magazine close to the one i will doing which is about the indie rock punk side of music. This magazine reaches its target audience with a variety of different factors such as the color schema which is black and red along with most of the head lines being white text with a black block background making it more bold and effective making it more in your face. There is only one image and thats related to the main article which covers the majority of the page making your eye drawn to it along with its massive text underneath saying 'the end of the Astoria'. There is also the band index of all the bands who are mentions in the magazine which also appeals to there target audience as it makes things easer for the people who read the magazine to read the articles that appeal to them most so there target audiences is both narrowed and widened as people can now be more involved in what they read. 



this magazine content page is from the vibe magazine which is manly a urban type music such as r&b and hop hop tis can be seen in this contents page as instead of it being very wordy its main eye catcher is the picture that serves as the background that the text is based around and none of the text gives any notice to who this is. also instead of having everything in the magazine it only has 3 or 4 articles noted down as its the most important in that issue 2 in the featured section and 2 in the fashion section so instead of having more information as to which articles contain what like the first example this is more you have to read to find what you want to read. there is also the color and font which both back each other as the color is black and white with the background with a fade from black to white as the back ground changes so the the text to make the words even though there aren't many make them more stand out using the complete different color both on a different end of the spectrum. these things appeal to the average urban person of a 20-30 male this is back up more by the girl on her back with the legs in the air with her legs in the shape of a V this more more likely appeal to a hip hop boy then a punk rocker girl.

This contents page i from a karrang mag which is aimed at the rocker people. the images back up there target audience by the type of people in the images for example the main photo which is larger then the rest and the rest are surround by showing its importance is of  main which a very prominent tattoo of something you would expect to see more on rock singer then a hip hop star. However i don't think the layout represents there target audience as the layout is a lot more organized then the other 2 however when you think of a karrang magazine reader you have a different image of someone who's appearances are a lot more chaotic. The font is basic contents font which is bold and big to get its message across of what you will be expecting how ever the color isn't so normal with the mixture of black and yellow which gives the impression of a bee this makes the important things stand out as its a lot more clearly to spot. I think other then the layout is does represent its target audience as its done things different such as the color which kinda sums up the rocker stereotype of them being different  there is also the content of the images which show the different aspects of the magazine to the music with the person shouting into the microphone in the bottom left image to the group of people in the middle right picture which shows the social aspect of the magazine.

Reader profile

My target audience i got from a series of questions to get a better understanding of my target audience and how to appeal to them be it music tastes, What color to use, Type of language, Text to image ratio, Or what to advertise such as games to car insurance. This is what i got
-70% male audience
-Between the ages of 16-24
-Like to live life to the fullest and try to have fun where possible
-New the music magazines
-Prefer indie rock to other genres
-65% them are students in collage or school 15% in university
-50% of them are gamers 40% like to socialize with friends
-90% first thing they do is go on a social network site such as facebook

The best way to advertise to these people is to make the magazine a indie rock magazine with bands like The Killers or Elbow making sure we get interview and concert tickets to give away to entice people to read and buy this magazine. Next is to use a color that would favor the teenage boy so black reds blues mostly dark colors for front covers. Also use simple magazine language so we don't bamboozle the new comers to music magazine. Next is to have articles to appeal to those who prefer to have fun then work so we have something like sending a famous artiest to do something crazy each week like free fall parachuting or bungee jumping of the empire state building. Also have things that relate to the ages and there day time activities so things to do with education such as exam tips, revision songs ect. Also have something like top 10 facebook status and twitter posts to keep the social network fans something to be interested in. Also get sponsors from companies such as big game developers e.g blizzard entertainment also from clubs for people who like to go out with friends and be social with such as local hotspots for a all the big cities such as Manchester or London.

Impact of a target audience questionnaire

The impact a questionnaire would have on a magazine would be to find who its target at and how to appeal to that audience more so they buy there magazine not someone else for example if there questionnaire came out as people who like hip hop who between the ages of 20-25 who prefer coke over pepsi then they have a much better understanding of how to reach these people such as to advertise more coke based brands or to use something that 20-25 year old are most likely are to be interested in such as new clubs or more social media type things like facebook groups .


My questionnaire wasn't to in-depth or to vague so i got a basic understanding of who is my target audience is, Without being so detailed that I only please 20 people. My target audience will impact many different things of my magazine including the color schema if its a female hipster the colors would be more pink and blues where as if its a boy who is into Heavy metal music it will be more blacks and reds it will also change how I write if its a man between 30-35 it will be more formal to say a girl of 16-20 where it will be use of slang. Overall i think my questionnaire will affect mine so that i will use more blacks and red for the colors, use of slang, target music of indie rock, advertise gaming products and movies over things such as home insurance or something like Mac-Donald, The bands or singers would most likely be more masculine. All these things will help reach the target audience  but wont freeze out other people from picking up the magazine and trying it out.

For this project we looked into making a magazine for the school and seeing the difference between that and a music magazine.

These are the front cover and contents for that school mag

I used the school colors of red and white as well making a school logo to make it look as profession as possible however i think that in the end i made some mistakes like the choice in images as well the font for the title and the articles

The same goes for the contents pages as it did for the front page i feel the content as well as the font were not a good choice and i think that the color was a bad idea on this page as it just doesn't look like a magazine more of a fast food menu.

A mock up of some ideas for 3 different genres of music magazine

These are a look at 3 different types of music magazine and how i thought i would approach them overall i think there are a lot of things to improve such as the colors and the articles head lines i though might be too long i will take these things into consideration when it comes to my final project.

This is the first idea i had for a indie rock sort of genre. I think that overall this wasn't a success as i don't think the overall title fits for this genre as well as the font used, However i think the model for the front cover was a good match for the indie style.

This is my idea for a R&B style magazine i think overall the model and title were a good idea but when it comes down to the font and the front cover articles they could be better.

This was an example of a hip hop magazine and when it came to this i had mixed ideas where as i liked the title and the font i got mixed feedback so if i do decide to do a hip hop magazine i will have to listen to the target audience very carefully
